In 2021, country music fans finally got the collaboration they’d been waiting for when Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton teamed up for a duet. Despite being legends in the industry, this was the first time the two powerhouse voices had ever recorded a song together.
The iconic duo took on “Does He Love You,” originally a hit for McEntire and Linda Davis in 1993. The song, written by Sandy Knox and Billy Stritch, tells the story of a wife and mistress questioning the love of the man they share. McEntire and Parton’s version was featured on McEntire’s 2021 album Revived Remixed Revisited and quickly became a fan favorite, landing in the Top 50 of Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart.
Parton couldn’t hide her excitement about the duet, sharing with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, “I’ve always wanted to sing with her, and I don’t know why it took us this long. We really sounded good together, and I think the fans are going to love it.”
McEntire, too, marveled at the long-awaited collaboration, saying, “It’s amazing that we’ve never done a duet before. We’ve always supported each other, but never recorded a song together—it’s kinda weird.”
Not only did they record the track, but they also filmed a music video. The video shows the two sharing drinks at a club, exchanging some playful tension before heading to the stage to finish the song. McEntire cherished the behind-the-scenes moments, saying, “Getting to hang out and visit like girlfriends was so much fun. We played the parts of women who didn’t like each other at first, but by the end, we were like, ‘Ah, you can have him!’”
Will this legendary duo work together again? McEntire certainly hopes so, sharing, “We did talk about doing more stuff together. I loved working with her—she’s so professional, funny, and witty. I could listen to her talk all day long.”
Fans are eagerly waiting to see what these country icons do next together!
