As the American Idol Season 23 finale approaches on May 18, fans everywhere are cheering for their favorites — and for many, Jamal Roberts has become the heart of this season’s story.

The 27-year-old Mississippi P.E. teacher and father of three didn’t just show up and shine overnight. His journey has been years in the making — filled with faith, setbacks, and an unwavering belief in his dream.

A Dream That Almost Stayed Quiet

Jamal first caught America’s attention with a soulful take on Rick James’ “Mary Jane,” earning a golden ticket and praise from all three judges — Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood.

But what fans didn’t see? This was Jamal’s third time auditioning for Idol.

He was once told he was too young. Another time, he came unprepared. But instead of giving up, Jamal took every “no” as a lesson.

“I’ve always been able to take constructive criticism and use it,” he told Billboard. “I never gave up.”

From Church Choir to Center Stage

Born and raised in Meridian, Mississippi, Jamal’s musical journey began almost before he could talk.

“I started singing at two years old,” he shared. “If the church doors were open, I was there — singing, playing drums, ushering.”

With a bishop grandfather and a deacon father, faith and music have always been central to Jamal’s life. That foundation gave him the strength to keep going — even when life got tough.

A Father’s Fire

Between auditions, Jamal’s life changed in big ways. He became a dad to three girls, including a newborn daughter born just before he reached the Top 7.

While raising a family, he continued chasing music. In 2020, he released an independent single, quietly building his sound long before the big stage came calling.

“I want my daughters to see what hard work and faith look like,” Jamal said. “This journey is for them.”

His voice, story, and spirit have resonated with fans across the country. He didn’t get here easily — and that’s exactly what makes his rise so powerful.
