For longtime Tom Petty fans, this is the kind of news that can bring back a flood of memories.
More than two decades after the classic lineup last shared a stage together, four original members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are set to reunite in Nashville this week. Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair will perform together once again, with Chris Stapleton stepping in as the group’s frontman for the opening performance at the Americana Honors & Awards.
And the reunion comes with even bigger news.
The performance coincides with the announcement of a new archival box set, “Origins 1971–1978,” scheduled for release on November 6 to mark the 50th anniversary of the band. The collection will explore the group’s earliest years and include previously unreleased recordings.
One of those hidden gems has already surfaced: “Parade of Loons,” an unheard Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song recorded in 1978. A newly released music video accompanies the track.
The four original Heartbreakers will also appear together during AmericanaFest for a special panel titled “Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: 50 Years.”
Campbell and Tench remained with Petty throughout the band’s core history until his death in 2017. Blair originally departed in 1982 before returning two decades later, while Lynch left the group permanently in 1994. The four musicians famously reunited with Petty at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in 2002, where they performed two songs together.
Now, more than 20 years later, they’re sharing a stage again.
