Sum 41 recently made headlines when Deryck Whibley reached out to the band’s former frontman, Jon Marshall.

Marshall parted ways with the band in 1997 after a brief one-year stint as lead singer. In a recent interview with Daily Mail, Whibley expressed a desire to reconnect with his former bandmate, mentioning that he wrote a song titled ‘Johnny Libertine’ with Marshall in mind:

“[The song] is a nod to Jon. He embodied the essence of punk rock like no one else I knew.”

Whibley reflected on Marshall’s abrupt departure from the band, recalling:

“We were just 16 when we knew him. He had this fearless, no-plan-B attitude. He was my closest friend, and then one day, he vanished from our lives.”

‘A Fitting Farewell’

Discussing their latest album, ‘Heaven :x: Hell,’ Whibley described it as the perfect farewell to their fans:

“We couldn’t have made a more fitting record to bid farewell. I want Sum 41 to end on a high note, with everything surrounding the band bringing us joy.”

Sum 41 is currently on their farewell tour, recently performing at the Download Festival and Dublin. Their European leg includes stops in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal.

Following their Canadian tour in August, the band will tour the US, visiting cities like San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Detroit, Orlando, Houston, and Phoenix. The tour concludes with a final homecoming show in Canada in January 2025.
