‘Jeff Scott Soto Wasn’t The Right Fit For Journey,’ Ross Valory Explains

A former bassist discussed his past and future with his band during an interview with Dr. Music.

He revealed why a certain former member wasn’t the right fit. While acknowledging that the individual is a great singer, he explained:

“He stepped up and did everything he could to fill several shoes on short notice. A different approach to entertainment, a different kind of voice. But he did as well as he could, hats off to him. His stay was rather brief when it came to writing and arranging new material. His style was very different from what we believed the band’s signature vocal approach should be, so it just didn’t work out.”

The former member joined during a tour in 2006, stepping in for another singer dealing with vocal issues. After a successful run of shows, he was officially announced as the new singer later that year. However, his time with the band was short-lived as he was let go in June of the next year.

There’s been talk about why he left, and he mentioned considering legal action. Still, in another interview, he expressed that his time with the band was very meaningful to him:

“Probably one of the greatest experiences of my life. I treated it with absolute respect – when I’m on the road, I tend to have a couple of drinks with the guys; I’ll drink on stage and that can wear you down if you do too much excess. When I joined, I vowed not to drink at all, even beer. I wanted to deliver; I knew the fans were being really critical. I was going to be under the microscope every night, being scrutinized. I wanted to give them no excuses and no reasons to have to defend why they got me into the band.”
