Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci recently shared exciting updates about the band’s upcoming album in an interview with GuitarWorld. A key highlight is the return of original drummer Mike Portnoy, reuniting him with the band for this new project. Petrucci expressed great enthusiasm about Portnoy’s return, recalling their early days starting Dream Theater while they were students at Berklee College of Music.
Petrucci mentioned that the band is about to commence work on the new album in less than two weeks, although they haven’t yet started composing any new material. He anticipates that once they begin, the creative process will feel natural and reminiscent of their earlier days.
Mike Portnoy’s journey has been a rollercoaster since he departed from Dream Theater in September 2010, when Mike Mangini stepped in to fill his role. However, in a surprising twist, Dream Theater announced on October 25, 2023, that Portnoy was rejoining, leading to Mangini’s exit.
Portnoy sees this reunion as potentially the final act for Dream Theater, considering the members’ ages. Despite his recent rejoining, he has expressed that Dream Theater will be his primary focus moving forward, especially with the new album and upcoming tours. This decision affects his involvement in other bands like The Winery Dogs and Sons of Apollo. While he is proud of his achievements outside Dream Theater in the past 13 years, he notes that the future of these projects remains uncertain as he dedicates his energy to Dream Theater.
This reunion and the anticipation of new music mark a significant and possibly defining moment in Dream Theater’s history, promising a blend of their original essence with the maturity and experiences gained over the years.
