MATT SORUM Says He Looks At His Exclusion From GUNS N’ ROSES Reunion Differently Now: ‘I’m Not Supposed To Be There’

In a recent interview with Chasta and Baby Huey of San Francisco Bay Area’s 107.7 The Bone radio station, Matt Sorum shared his reflections on his tenure as the drummer for GUNS N’ ROSES. The 63-year-old musician, who took over from Steven Adler, described the experience as chaotic and intense. “It was chaotic. It was crazy. Axl was sometimes late going on stage. Who cares? That was the energy. If people complained, by the time he came on stage, it was just on — game on,” Sorum recounted (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

Sorum elaborated on the backstage atmosphere, noting the emotional turmoil that fueled their performances. “What was going on backstage caused a lot of emotional angst in a punk rock way. Some of us were angry — myself included. We were like, ‘Where is he?’ But once we got up there, it was like, ‘Ahhhh.’ And we took it all out on stage,” he explained. Reflecting on the band’s dynamic, Sorum mentioned, “I always say to guys like Tré Cool from GREEN DAY, ‘You have the same band and the same guys. How does that feel? And it’s only three guys, so you split the money three ways. That’s cool.’ [Laughs].”

Despite not being part of the current GUNS N’ ROSES lineup, Sorum expressed gratitude for his time with the band. “I had that moment with the band, and it’s really shaped and formed my life. A lot of doors have opened because of it,” he said. Addressing his exclusion from the recent tours, Sorum reflected, “Initially, it was a little weird not getting a call to be part of it. But now I see it differently. I’m not supposed to be there. I have a child and a beautiful wife. The old me, the old Matt, if I got up there, I don’t know what would happen to me. I don’t know.”
