Neil Young Takes An ‘Unplanned’ Break From Touring

Neil Young and his band, Crazy Horse, have made the difficult decision to cancel the remaining dates of their Love Earth Tour due to illness among band members.

In a message posted on their website, Young expressed gratitude for the tour experience but explained that several band members fell ill following their last show in Detroit’s Pine Knob. As a result, they are unable to continue touring at this time:

“The Love Earth Tour has been an incredible experience for us. We’ve had fantastic audiences and enjoyed making music together. Unfortunately, after a few of us became ill post-Detroit’s Pine Knob show, we had to make the tough call to stop. We’re still recovering, so regrettably, our tour will now take an unexpected hiatus.”

Apologies to Fans

The band apologized to their fans in the statement, promising to reschedule missed dates once they are back to full health:

“We hope to reschedule some of these dates in the future when we’re ready to rock again! We understand many of you made plans to see us and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Our health is our top priority, and we look forward to returning to the stage to perform more shows and create more music for you—and for ourselves. With love and gratitude from Crazy Horse—Neil, Micah, Ralph, and Billy. Love Earth.”

The cancellation affects seven shows in Canada and three in the U.S., including performances at the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California, and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Prioritizing Health and Safety

Before embarking on the Love Earth Tour in April, Neil Young had opted to only play outdoor venues as a precautionary measure due to health concerns. He emphasized the importance of caution regarding indoor gatherings:

“We have to be cautious. If you look at a group of 15,000 or 20,000 people randomly, and then compare that to a group of people who all attended an indoor show, you’d likely find a higher risk of illness among the indoor crowd. I don’t feel the need to take that risk. Willie Nelson advised me that he now only performs outdoors, and I thought that was a wise choice, so that’s what we’ve been doing.”

The Love Earth Tour kicked off on April 24 at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre in San Diego, California. Nils Lofgren of Crazy Horse couldn’t join due to prior commitments with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, leading Micah Nelson to fill in for him.
