Shawn Crahan: ‘Vermilion’ No Longer Seen From Corey’s Perspective

During a recent Q&A session on Reddit, Shawn Crahan reflected on how the meaning of the song ‘Vermilion’ evolved for him over the years.

When asked if any songs held different meanings for him as time passed, the percussionist responded:

“‘Vermilion.’ Over the years, ‘Vermilion’ has changed colors in my mind. Initially, I listened to it from Corey [Taylor]’s perspective, but as time went on, the colors shifted to reflect my own personal experiences. The lyrics began to resonate more deeply with me, and I started envisioning different scenes in my mind. It’s a song that evokes strong emotions and allows me to express a lot. It’s essential.”

### What Is ‘Vermilion’ About?

‘Vermilion’ serves as the second single from their third album, ‘Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses).’ Corey Taylor has previously elaborated on the song’s concept:

“The song was originally part of a demo that Paul [Gray, bassist] and Joey [Jordison, drummer] put together. When I first heard it, I immediately associated it with the color red. I was intrigued by the idea of portraying a world through the eyes of a stalker. I aimed to capture the dark urgency and desperate longing that accompanies such intense emotions.”

Joey Jordison, who co-wrote the track, added:

“I composed most of it, and then Paul contributed the middle section. When I write, I always consider Corey’s role in the song. The dynamic between me, Paul, and Corey has always been fascinating.”

During live performances of ‘Vermilion,’ the band replaces their regular masks with ‘death masks,’ which are casts of each member’s actual faces. The song also features in the soundtrack of the 2004 film ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse,’ playing during the end credits.

‘Vermilion Pt. 2’ continues the narrative from the first part of the song. As Taylor explained, while ‘Vermilion Pt. 1’ explores anticipation and neurosis, ‘Part 2’ delves into the aftermath and potential guilt following those intense emotions.
