Charlie Watts didn’t think The Rolling Stones Would Last That Long

Charlie Watts, the drummer of The Rolling Stones was the last one to join the crew. His pals, Mick and Keith had joined their hands a year before the Rolling Stones formed. Charlie was the oldest member of the band and was the band’s support for over half a century. He also disclosed that the band was only his temporary fix at that time.

Charlie died at the age of 80 last year and he surely was proud of everything he did. On August 24, 2021, the news was revealed that he had passed away peacefully by Watt’s spokesperson. He also revealed, “Charlie was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather and also as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation,”

Throwback to his career, he grew up with jazz. He was a self-taught drummer. After his time in school, he played part-time for jazz bands in his locality. Until his friend convinced him to try out a band named, ‘The Rolling Stones’. And when he first joined the band he revealed that he had doubts about the future. Even after three years he was not really convinced of their future as a band.

According to The Guardian, Watts said, “I used to play with loads of bands, and the Stones were just another one. I thought they’d last three months, then a year, then three years, then I stopped counting.”

He also added, “We’re very fortunate. One of the ways that it lasted so long (is) because we have a huge fan base, and I don’t mean that in a conceited way, but it is that.”

The Rolling Stones has sold more than 200 million records worldwide and has over 30 studio albums. Before his death, he was replaced by Steve Jordan as Watts was undergoing a medical procedure. At that time, Watts said to continue without him.

On the band’s 50th anniversary he also felt very fortunate and said, “I think we’re going to be doing a lot of 50th-anniversary stuff, we, the Rolling Stones… Fifty years of things. A documentary, well, they haven’t approved it yet. I haven’t seen it, but we worked on that earlier this year. Books and things like that. There will be other things that the 50 years mean. And touring, we haven’t gotten that far. We’re still talking about the color of the back page of the book, so we’ll see what happens.”

Even though he speculated that the band would last for a very short time, it didn’t. It went on to last for more than half a century. And now the band is left alone without him but as far as we know him, he would want The Rolling Stones to continue for as long as they can.
