Max Cavalera Says He Read Bad Reviews About Sepultura To Get Pissed Off And Have A Great Show

In a recent interview with Chaoszine, Max Cavalera, the former Sepultura member and current frontman of Soulfly, discussed why he decided to launch an official Instagram account. Despite not using a cellphone, he collaborated with his wife and manager, Gloria Cavalera, to make it happen. He shared:

“As much as I wanted to stay away from it, because—I like it, but I don’t let it be the only thing in my life. That’s why I don’t have a cell phone. I’m one of the few people in the world that don’t have a cell phone. And I feel very free about that because when I go to eat at a restaurant, I want to talk to my friends. I want to sit down at a table and talk to people, not stare at some machine. I think that’s ridiculous when people are in a restaurant, sitting across from each other, and they don’t talk to each other. It’s f*cking sad.”

How Negative Feedback Fuels Cavalera

While he avoids using a phone himself, Cavalera does use his wife’s phone to read negative comments, which he finds motivating for his performances. He explained how this affects his mindset:

“I always did this—even back in the day, in the Sepultura days before the Internet. I would read bad reviews so I get real pi*sed off and have a good show. So now I kind of do the same. I tell her, like, ‘Show me some people talking sh*t.’ So she gives me the phone, and there’s all these people talking sh*t. And I read it, and I go on stage and I f*ck shit up. It’s ammunition. It’s gasoline for the fire.”
