Kiki Wong, the new guitarist for Smashing Pumpkins, is eager to reinfuse the band with its signature heavier sound.
Reflecting on her guitar skills, Wong shared:
“Honestly, I may not be the absolute best player out there – in fact, I know I’m not! I’m continuously learning, trying to improve every day. But what I have is an undying love for guitar and heavy metal.”
She elaborated on her passion for guitar and heavy metal:
“I probably have an unhealthy obsession with guitar and heavy metal, and a slightly self-deprecating sense of humor. But I hope it can bring a little bit of that heavy side of Pumpkins out more, since I know that’s what their music is rooted in.”
Smashing Pumpkins Introduces Kiki Wong
Last October, the original Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder parted ways with the band. This led Smashing Pumpkins to search for a new guitarist, keeping fans updated throughout the process. Last month, they announced on Instagram that Kiki Wong had been chosen as their new guitarist:
“First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months. I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered—and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus.”
Wong also shared her excitement about joining the band:
“It’s been an absolute wild ride, but I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen to perform alongside some of rock’s greatest and most influential musicians of all time. I never thought little ol’ 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment. It goes to show hard work and perseverance truly pay off if you’re willing to push through the tough stuff, so never lose hope out there. I am so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to share the stage with the legendary Smashing Pumpkins!”
Kiki Wong will make her live debut with the Smashing Pumpkins on June 7 at the Birmingham Utilita Arena, kicking off their tour with Weezer. Following their European dates, they will continue their performances in the United States.
