Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen has been left with a head injury after he was attacked while smoking a cigarette outside a Florida hotel. The 59-year-old claimed that a man charged at him while running from behind a pole as he was standing outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Max Hartley, 19, who is said to have been on spring break and who was reported as being “very inebriated” in one 911 call, has been charged by police. The victim was reportedly smoking outside the hotel when Hartley, who was hiding behind a pole, charged at him, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain head injuries.

As a part of the ongoing co-headlining tour by Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, Rick Allen was in South Florida this past weekend to play a gig at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. After the performance, Allen, who was a guest at the Four Seasons, went outside to smoke in the hotel’s valet area. That’s when the assailant approached the 59-year-old.

To aid Allen, who had lost his left arm in a car accident in 1984, a woman who had watched everything ran out of the hotel at this moment. However, she too was attacked by Hartley and even dragged by her hair as she attempted to flee.

Allen’s identity is censored from the police report, although it does mention that the victim is crippled and is missing his left arm. After a New Year’s Eve vehicle accident in England, Allen, then 59, had to have his arm amputated.

The incident was reported as follows in the report:

“While she is on the ground, the defendant continues to batter her by striking her. [She] attempts to escape by running into the hotel. The defendant then grabs [her] by her hair and drags her out of the lobby and back onto the sidewalk before fleeing the area.”

Hartley allegedly attacked the woman and Rick Allen, fled the scene, and was subsequently apprehended by police because they discovered the young man damaging surrounding automobiles. He was accused of abusing an adult who was aged or disabled, as well as two counts of battery, four counts of criminal mischief, and abuse.

Hartley, who played football and lacrosse for Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, was supposedly in Florida for spring break at the time of the attack, according to Mail Online. The purpose of the attacks and if the perpetrator was a fan of Def Leppard are not yet revealed.

In a sworn statement to the police, the drummer declared his intention to bring charges against his assailant. But Rick and the band haven’t released any comments about what happened. Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard are getting ready to leave for their performance in Sheffield, UK, towards the end of May.
