Jimi has been the inspiration of every major guitarist in the world. He was one in a million. His exceptional talent to play guitar with both hands, the iconic Stratocaster, and the left handed-guitar playing everything were great. Jimi blazed everyone in the crowd with his charismatic performances.
Literally, everyone is his fan. But one person among the prominent ones is Stevie Nicks.
Throwback to one of the greatest moments in the history of rock. It was a big surprise when Hendrix dedicated a song to young Stevie in the late 1960s.
Before Fleetwood Mac, Stevie and her then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham were in the band, Fritz. In late 1960, they opened for Jimi Hendrix. When Hendrix dedicated the song, it was something she would never forget in her life. In an interview with Joe Benson on the Ultimate Classic Rock Night radio show, Nicks explained,
“I was inspired by Jimi Hendrix from a rock standpoint, because Lindsay and I got to open for him, It was a big huge show in San Fransisco. There was like 20 bands on; there was you, there was 15 more bands and then there was Jimi Hendrix.”
She also explained how Hendrix dedicated a song to her. Nicks said that it was very surprising for her. Stevie quoted, “The perk that you get when you do that is that you get to be on the side of the stage when Jimi Hendrix goes on. And he actually dedicated a song to me. He looked over at me and said, ‘This is for you, babe.’ And I’m like, ‘You’re awesome! You are so awesomely cute and handsome and you play so amazing and thank you, Jimi!'”
During the same event, Fritz also opened up for Janis Joplin. Janis and Jimi had some similarities. They were both members of the 27 Club. While talking about her, she explained in 2011,
“From Janis I learned that to make it as a female musician in a man’s world is gonna be tough and you need to keep your head held high. From Jimi I learned grace and humility.”
It wasn’t the only event that inspired Nicks. She has also talked about how she once saw him live. Nicks said, “I saw him play once and I remember thinking, ‘I want to wear white fringe. I want to tie a beautiful scarf in my hair.” It was back in 1997. This truly reveals that she was inspired by Hendrix’s outfits. It was during the interview with BAM Magazine.
Jimi and Nicks loved their company. They did hang out a few times. Hendrix and Nicks jammed together at the New York Nightclub, The Scene in 1968. Nicks surely has a special place in her heart for Jimi. But sadly, to this day, we have no idea what mystery song Hendrix dedicated to Nicks.
