The Beatles Song That Left David Crosby ‘Stupefied’

David Crosby said that there is a Beatles song that left him ‘stupefied’. Most people remember what it is like to hear the song which changes the way they interact with others. For David Crosby, it was a Beatles song, and it was back in 1967.

Talking about The Beatles, during their decade-long career, they released 12 studio albums and had a string of iconic singles. This inspired many musicians who hailed in the 70s and 80s. They are influencers to many modern music artists too.

Back when the Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band’ was coming to its final stages, and David was one of the first people to hear the song from the album. The song was ‘A Day In The Life‘ which is undoubtedly one of the best songs from the album.

The song was written by the Lennon-McCartney duo, and it was something Lennon was proud of. It is a great closing song to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band. Lennon was very critical when it came to songwriting but even for him ‘A Day In The Life’ was a great work of his and McCartney’s. He said, “It was a good piece of work between Paul and me. I had the ‘I read the news today’ bit, and it turned Paul on. Now and then we really turn each other on with a bit of song, and he just said ‘yeah’ – bang, bang, like that. It just sort of happened beautifully.”

David Crosby explained that the song was just too good. For him though, what stood out the most was the Beatles’ production style. The day he heard the song for the first time was the best thing to happen to him that day, he says. He said, “The best thing that ever happened to me was visiting The Beatles when they were making Sgt. Pepper, I came in and I was very high. They sat me down on a stool in the middle of the studio and rolled up two six-foot-tall speakers on either side of me. Then, laughing, they climbed the stairs back to the control room and left me there. And then they played ‘A Day in the Life.’ At the end of that last chord, my brains just ran out my nose onto the floor in a puddle. I didn’t know what to do, I was just stupefied.”

Not only that, but Crosby was also a fan of The Beatles’ ‘Revolver‘. Back in October 2022, he spoke with Mojo and that’s when he revealed that he also loved the album Revolver. He explained, he doesn’t remember where and exactly when he heard the album but it was a big deal for him. “I just know what it did to me. ‘Rubber Soul’ was what you thought the Beatles were, but ‘Revolver’ — somebody has smoked a joint and dropped acid. Their consciousness was completely different and it’s a joy for that”, he said.

The brain is unable to figure out how to untangle the intricate web of overtones (naturally occurring harmonies) that it has been presented with since the sound is so complicated and full of them. It was obvious that Crosby would be surprised by the song.
