Robert Smith has been in the rock scene for over 40 years now. The lead singer of the band The Cure, which was formed in 1976. Smith is known for his distinctive voice and stage presence. Also, the lyrics he wrote contain dark and introspective elements which was quite a thing back in the day.
All these years in the music industry and he surely has been in a few feuds of his own. While he may love, Mogwai, Placebo, David Bowie, and a few more artists, some are not that lucky. From Def Leppard, and Queen to Morrissey, he had quite a thing to say about them.
Till now, he has sold over 27 million records worldwide and his band has released 13 studio albums. The Cure was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. His opinions could be quite harsh but he always delivers them in a funny way. Here are the bands he hates the most.
Five Bands Robert Smith Hates:
The Darkness
The Darkness is an English Band that formed in 2000. Their debut album ‘Permission to Land’ was released in 2003 and has hit songs like ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ and ‘Growing on Me’. However, Robert Smith had a different opinion of the band.
He believed the band lacked originality. Also, the frontman’s style was not charming to him. He said, “To have that rehashed and reheated for a second time around is pretty weird. So, no, I don’t like the Darkness at all.”
Queen
Same with Queen, he simply didn’t like the music Queen played. The pop songs they played were not to his liking. Maybe Freddie had his own thing and Robert had his own. And he was quite harsh too. Robert said, “Well, I never liked Queen. I can honestly say I hated Queen and everything that they did.”
Morrissey
Robert is quite cynical. He doesn’t like a thing and he just doesn’t. About Morrissey, he said, “I’ve realized how easily these things can spiral because people want it to be something. They’re desperate for it to be some sort of soap opera. If Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I’ll eat meat. That’s how much I hate Morrissey.”
Well, that’s not the end to it, Morrissey also called Smith a ‘whine bag’. Then, he replied, “Morrissey’s so depressing if he doesn’t [off] himself soon, I probably will.”
Def Leppard
Seems like he is not a fan of the glam side. Def Leppard and Smith, both love David Bowie but looks like it was not enough for him. According to Smith, he wanted their album, Wish to be number one in America. Sadly it didn’t go number one. And the reason? You guessed it.
“I wanted the album to be number one in America. I hate Def Leppard. I hate them anyway, but I hate them even more now.” Robert said.
Duran Duran
Smith had quite a thing to say about Duran Duran. He even went on to say they were a horror show. About Duran Duran, he commented, “It was generally Duran Duran, which is really sad because they loved us and they used to come to our shows. But they represented everything we hated: the whole glamorous 80s, consumer bullshit; this horror show that we were up against.”
