It is impossible to deny Nirvana’s influence on grunge music. Nirvana established grunge with its distinctive sound, attitude, and style as the most popular and influential band in the genre. Their unfiltered, emotionally charged music made grunge popular, and their songs about alienation and disaffection in the 1990s struck a chord with the feelings of the younger generation. Numerous other grunge bands from the Seattle scene, such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, were able to break through thanks to Nirvana’s success.

For Cobain, blending the old and new was always a good idea. He appreciated different forms of art and wanted to create different things himself. He once shared that one of his favorite bands is The Vaselines and about them he said,

“They’re kind of sharing their life with people. Eugene and Frances are the Captain & Tennille of the underground.”

Nirvana went on to become of the most successful bands in the world debut their success was not predicted. In fact, a lot of record companies turned down the band at the time because they thought they were “too grunge” for mainstream listeners. But the group persisted, and in 1989, to much praise, they finally released their debut record, “Bleach.” Following the publication of their breakthrough album, “Nevermind,” in 1991, which propelled them to prominence on a global scale, their popularity soared.

As a band, the three of them were never that open about anything other than music. They were not really into movies too. They even declined to be a part of Cameron Crowe’s hit 1992 film SinglesAccording to Cobain, “There’s never really been a good documentary on rock and roll bands.” and it was the reason they rejected the movie.

In the interview, Dave later on added that they were a movie that was worth watching. He said, “Except for Spinal Tap, [that] was the only rock movie worth watching.”Cobain agreed before suggesting the 1967 Bob Dylan documentary Don’t Look Back as another work well worth viewers’ time.

Nirvana’s influence went far beyond the realm of music since Cobain’s words served as a rallying cry for disenfranchised youth. Despite having a tragically short existence, the group had many innovative moments that helped define music in the 1990s and beyond, solidifying their reputation as one of the most recognizable rock bands of all time.
