What Guitar Does Ed Sheeran Play?

Ed Sheeran is undeniably one of the most popular and successful artists in the entire world at the present. However, he didn’t become successful and popular just with luck as he worked hard for years and pursued his career. Initially, he was a street performer who started singing in the church choir at a very young age. Over the years, he has improved a lot and has released many banger songs that are popular throughout the world.

He also started playing guitar at the age of 11 and also wrote songs while he was in high school. By looking at his life we can see that he has been interested in music since an early age. Thus, let’s find out about his guitar and whether he has some reasons to use the particular guitar or not.

The Guitar that Ed Sheeran Plays

As you might already know, there are various kinds of guitars that are used by musicians such as acoustic, electric, bass, classical, etc. Ed Sheeran also uses various kinds of guitars but his most used guitars are the Martin LX1 series acoustic guitars. The size of his guitar is ¾ and he is very good at playing the guitar and performing as well. Additionally, he also has his own signature guitar

  • Martin Ed Sheeran x Signature Edition

Martin Ed Sheeran x Signature Edition Guitars are his first signature model which was announced in February 2015 by Martin & Co ahead of his live dates in the Summer. Ed Sheeran has said that the guitar is awesome and it’s quite similar to the ones that he plays currently. The model was named after his latest album release of that time titled “x”.

This model is quite similar to Martin LX1E with a solid Sitka spruce top and rosewood back. It has a beautiful koa wood back and sides. You can also see the “x” symbol located just below the neck joint. He sold out the Wembley Arena when he used this guitar to play his song “I’m a Mess”. At the present, he still uses this guitar while performing along with its “divide” successor version.

  • Fender Eric Clapton Crash 1 Stratocaster

Fender Eric Clapton Crash 1 Stratocaster is an electric guitar that Ed Sheeran bought as he was inspired by  Eric Clapton. He started playing guitar because of Eric and this guitar is actually a custom-made guitar for Clapton. It was made in 2001 and was painted by Matos. Clapton used this guitar from 2001 to 2004 so it has some historical significance as well.

Ed Sheeran used this guitar while performing his song “Thinking Out Loud” from 2015 to 2017. However, he later found out that the guitar was an unauthorized reproduction so he stopped using it. But he has contacted the same artist and paid the artist to make his own “Crash” guitar. Just like Eric Clapton, Ed Sheeran also owns a custom-made ” guitar which was made by Crash and Teddy M. It is now known as Crash x Teddy M Strat and he uses this guitar instead of the Eric Clapton Crash. He uses this custom-made guitar to this date and it is really one of the unique and coolest guitars that Ed Sheeran owns.

  • Lowden WL-35

As you might know, Ed Sheeran’s paternal grandparents are Irish and while listening to his songs we can clearly see that his songs are somewhat influenced by Ireland. In  2012, he received Lowden guitar from the frontman for the Irish band Snow Patrol, namely Gary Lightbody. Gary gave the Lowden guitar from his own collection to Ed Sheeran as he was very much interested in Lowden’s. Later, he took Ed to the owner of Lowden guitars and asked the owner to make a special guitar just for Ed.

Thus, they made a special Lowden guitar just for Ed and it was a small-body guitar that Ed prefers. Ed had recorded five songs on his album titled “x” with Gary’s Lowden guitar. The special guitar made for Ed Sheeran turned into the WL (Wee Lowden) series and it boosted the bond between Ed and Gary. The series has gone official and Ed has been using the Lowden WL-35 model since 2018.

  • Lowden GL-10

Another guitar that Ed Sheeran likes to use from the Lowden series is the GL-10. It was first introduced in 2018 and ever since then he has been using this guitar quite a lot while performing live on stage, especially in his song titled “Thinking Out Loud”. The guitar looks incredible and is very comfortable to use as it has a single cutaway design.

Talking about the guitar’s features, it is equipped with super smooth dual Lollar P90 pickups and has a wonderful AAAA solid top. Additionally, it has three adjustment knobs and a three-way sector switch. The guitar looks slick with its gold hardware and solid wood top. He still uses this guitar and over the years we have seen him use this guitar while performing electric songs.

  • PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody II

You might know Ed Sheeran for his acoustic plays. However, he used PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody II from 2014 to 2015 in order to amplify his sound. It is an electric guitar that Ed played during the 2014 iTunes Festival and while performing “Thinking Out Loud” live at Rock Rio in 2015.

It was made at Paul Reed Smith and features an incredibly shaped maple top and matching back. Additionally, it has a very comfortable design and a completely hollow body. It features dual-f-holes and produces a very smooth and soulful sound. This guitar is perfect for Ed Sheeran due to the built-in LR BAggs piezo system for acoustic overtones.
