No one can live an extraordinary life, like Freddie Mercury. In just 45 years, he achieved everything a rock star can achieve. Born in Zanzibar, Tanzania he moved to England in his late teens and formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
With Queen, he and his bandmates became a global icon. They turned their live performances into a theatrical experience and he is also considered one of the best live performers. Sadly he passed away in 1991 when he was just 45 years old. We can only imagine what he could have done if he were to be alive today.
Often times he was asked what made him follow the path he is currently following. In an interview recovered by Queen Archives, he answered the question and revealed what inspired him to be on the path.
He said, “I don’t know, I think I always liked to sing. I wanted to sing and I didn’t look upon it as a career but I just, you know. When I was a little baby I was in the choir and things like that. I just, I liked to sing. I don’t know, call it natural gift or whatever, you know, I’m not afraid to say it.”
“It’s just I like to sing and then I suddenly realized that I could actually write songs and then make my own music rather than before I would, you know. Sort of copy Elvis Presley songs and things as I do. Then I realized that I could actually write my own songs and do it my own way.”
Mercury has also talked about after tasting little success, he wanted to be successful like everyone else. He said like everyone else he also wanted to be a star. Freddie then gave an example of films as most people want to be successful actors or actresses after watching a film. Though he did reveal he never thought he was going to make a career out of it.
Freddie then concluded, “Suddenly I realized that this is the best thing I could do. Whenever it’s interesting that’s always what you really like doing, isn’t it? So what I’m doing right now is what interests me. I’m very happy that people buy my records and they like me. The day they stop buying my records I’ll go ‘Buy some more’ or give it all up.”
Freddie never thought he could make it big. However, Queen became one of the best-selling bands of all time. RIAA has certified that Queen has sold over 25 million records in the US alone. They have sold an estimated amount of 170 million to 300 million records worldwide. But, it’s important to note that these numbers constantly change. Freddie achieved his dream of being a rockstar and continues to live in the hearts of millions of his fans. Not that many people will achieve the feat he has achieved in his short life span.
